Kay Stephen is from Aberdeen and studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Katie Hull and at the Royal Northern College of Music with Pavel Fischer, taking up viola alongside violin early in her studies. In 2012 she completed an International Artist Diploma in string leadership as violinist with the Hallé Orchestra.!

Kay is violist with the Gildas Quartet, with whom she has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Conway Hall, St John's Smith Square, live on BBC Radio 3 and extensively at festivals around the UK and Europe. The quartet are currently City Music Foundation Artists and Junior Fellows in Chamber Music at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She is also violinist and violist with the Jacquin Trio, with chamber music residencies at Banff and Prussia Cove and is a member of the Pierrot Lunaire centred ensemble, Alluna. Much in demand as a freelance chamber musician, she has appeared with Red Note Ensemble, the Edinburgh Quartet and Ensemble Deva among others. !

Kay works with orchestras including the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, BBC SSO, RLPO, Royal Northern Sinfonia and has recently become a member of Manchester Camerata with whom she has appeared frequently as principal violist and as a soloist. !

When she isn't playing, she is happiest at home in Manchester with a good book and a glass of wine!
